DP2 Fall 2013
Concept Art for King Fisher Animation Short
I used multiple colors of color pencils to layout the different areas of animated scenes, as well as to make a distinction between various objects, elements, and characters in a scene.

ASSIGNMENT #3
Create 4 composited images (2 or more images per composition) loosely based on these parameters:
1) A combination which is believable (such as replacing a blank sky with a cloudy one)
2) A combination which somewhat believable (think of the in class scenario of the skier on the beach)
3) A combination which is not really believable (something crazy)
4) A combination of anything you want!
Have the files ready for class next week.

Discussion Topic #7:
Take a look at the work of these artists:
Mary Mattingly (read more info here)
Each of these artists use composted photography in different ways to further their conceptual ideas:
- Mattingly uses composited images to speak about consumer culture
- Gutschow (in her color landscapes) uses composited images to mimic idealized landscapes from paintings in the 1800's
- Gonzalez uses compositing to whimsically image vernacular architecture bloom into highly designed spaces.
- Lux uses photographs and photoshop to (somewhat) mimic painting
Does this way of working speak to you or is it too far removed from the idea of photography being" the decisive moment?". Leave a response below
Also - pick an image which you are interested in an explain why. This can be something that you like OR something that you don't like - just leave a response as to why.

Go to this website and click on the section titled "New Orleans" to view Robert Polodori's images of the town post-hurricane Katrina. Respond to these questions:
1) How does the use of color effect the content and mood of these photographs?
1b) How do the titles inform the images?
2) Do they feel like documents of a natural event or of an event which was created by the photographer (i.e. pictures of a real occurrence or of something made up)? Why do the images feel this way to you?
3) Pick an image that you are drawn to and tell us why you feel it is successful or not successful as an image.

READING/DISCUSSION #5
Barbara Probst's work consists of images taken using multiple cameras that capture a scene all at the exact same time (i.e. the shutters are triggered at the same time). Each series is titled "Exposure #____", as if they are one single exposure.
Take a look at the images
And the images as installations
(specifically the install at Murray-Guy)
Sam Taylor-Wood's series "5 Revolutionary Seconds" uses a modified camera to shoot 360degrees of a scene (i.e. a whole room). The title refers to the amount of time it takes for the camera to travel 360 degrees. This is shot onto a single piece of film - it is a single exposure.
View info and one image here (be sure to click on "view full image" and scroll right)
Find more images on Google
1) Describe the similarities and differences between these two series of work.

Assignment #2:
Shoot 100 pictures of the same scene/space/scenario – bring ALL files to the next class! The same, not different, all in one space! For instance, all 100 photos taken in your kitchen.
Be creative! Use different angles, close up, far away, from above, from below, move stuff, etc, etc, etc. Becoming bored of a situation makes you innovate! Content/concept is up to you – indoors, outdoors, in a car, on a boat, on a fire escape, in a closet, under the bed, under a bridge, in an empty lot, whatever. Photos should be contained to the same area.
PLEASE review and answer blog topic, it will help you think about what you are shooting.
Concepts to consider while shooting:
· Shooting on site – working with what is available
· Using different types of light and colors to effect mood
· Covering a scene (shooting enough material)
· How to EDIT – i.e. what good vs. so-so photograph
Concepts we will cover during the next class session:
- OUTPUT:
- Size/scale – how large should your images be to show the amount of detail you want/need
- PHOTOSHOP:
- Creating Panoramas
- Working with cropping
- Layers + rudimentary masks
- Curves
- Sharpening for printing (again)
- Up-rezing images

Discussion Topic #4:
Part #2 (a written paper + crit form) due October 14th!:
Gallery Trip -
Photographer Paper Assignment:
This assignment has three
parts. The first part involves
analyzing the actual photograph.
Step 1) Pick one image from the show that you have chosen to visit.
While you are at the gallery looking at the
photograph, write down its title and photographer. Write down any observations you make, and fill out the
critique form (you may need more space than what is provided on your sheet for
your answers).
Step 2) At
home and in the library, do some research on your photographer. Who are they? When were they the most active? What kind of photography do they typically produce? Were they part of any particular
movement? What kind of camera were they using? Try to create a short biography of their life and work.
Step 3) Create
a short essay (1-2 pages) by combining the information you have collected from
Step 1 and Step 2. If you need
some help organizing your essay, begin by stating who the photographer is, what
kind of photography they do, then talk about the photograph you saw in the show
and your observations of it.
Finish up the essay by giving some remarks – how did learning more about
the photographer effect the way you feel about the photograph you chose? Do you
wish you could have seen more of their work? Etc, etc, make up some of your own
conclusions.
